Antigua and Barbuda named among top retirement destinations
Antigua and Barbuda has received another international endorsement, this time being named by financial publication Investopedia as one of the four best places in the Caribbean for Americans to retire.
The July 25, 2026 report, titled “4 Best Places in the Caribbean for Americans to Retire for Affordability and Ease,” places Antigua and Barbuda alongside the Dominican Republic, The Bahamas and Jamaica as standout retirement destinations.
Investopedia highlighted Antigua and Barbuda’s English-speaking environment, infrastructure, tax structure, healthcare and options for permanent residency and citizenship among the factors making the twin-island state attractive to retirees.
The publication also pointed to established expatriate communities in areas such as Jolly Harbour and English Harbour, two of the country’s better-known residential and yachting communities.
For prospective retirees seeking a more permanent connection to the country, Investopedia noted that Antigua and Barbuda offers both permanent residency and a pathway to citizenship through its Citizenship by Investment Programme.
The publication cited investment options under the programme, including a minimum contribution of US$230,000 or the purchase of at least US$300,000 in approved real estate.
Antigua and Barbuda’s tax environment was also identified as an attraction, with the publication highlighting the absence of taxes on income, capital gains, wealth and inheritance.
However, Investopedia noted that living expenses can be comparatively high because many products consumed locally are imported. It also identified the cost of purchasing a home as another consideration for prospective retirees.
Healthcare was another area in which Antigua and Barbuda received favourable attention.
Investopedia described the country’s healthcare as among the best in the Eastern Caribbean, with the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre in St. John’s serving as the main centre for medical care.
The recognition could provide another boost to Antigua and Barbuda’s efforts to position itself not only as a vacation destination but also as an attractive location for long-term stays, investment and retirement.
The country is already internationally known for its beaches, warm climate, luxury resorts, yachting sector and tourism industry, while communities such as English Harbour and Jolly Harbour have long attracted overseas property owners and long-term residents.
Investopedia said its Caribbean selections were based on an extensive evaluation process covering affordability, visas and benefits, healthcare, accessibility, quality of life and governance.
Affordability carried the greatest weight at 35 per cent, followed by visas and retirement benefits at 20 per cent, healthcare at 16 per cent, accessibility at 13 per cent, quality of life at 11 per cent and governance at five per cent.
Researchers analysed 38 criteria, including 31 weighted criteria, and collected 1,520 individual data points during the research process.
The publication said information was gathered from government sources and international organisations, including the World Health Organization, World Bank and United Nations.
For Antigua and Barbuda, the recognition places the country among a select group of Caribbean destinations being promoted to Americans considering spending their retirement years outside the United States.
