The Antigua and Barbuda Falcons have made a winning start to their 2026 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League campaign, clinching a dramatic two-wicket victory over the Jamaica Kingsmen off the final ball in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Falcons successfully chased down a target of 168 at the Arnos Vale Stadium on Friday night, finishing on 168 for eight after earlier restricting the Kingsmen to 167 for seven.

Antiguan fast bowler Alzarri Joseph played a major role in the victory, producing an impressive spell of three wickets for 34 runs from his four overs.

Joseph removed Kingsmen captain Rovman Powell and dangerous all-rounder Andre Russell and was also involved in the run-out of Shayan Jahangir. His performance earned him the Player-of-the-Match award.

“It was really good playing my first game for the Falcons and putting in a performance like that,” Joseph said. “The team played really well together, and everyone really enjoyed being out on the field together.”

Joseph is already predicting a strong season for the Antigua and Barbuda franchise, pointing to the strength and versatility of the squad.

“We have a strong bowling lineup that, in my opinion, is one of the best in the competition and a batting lineup that can adjust to all conditions,” he said. “I’ve been saying from the inception, this year will be really special for the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.”

Dhillon Powers Falcons’ Chase

The Falcons’ pursuit of 168 received an early boost from Rahkeem Cornwall, who struck 24 from 21 deliveries, including two fours and two sixes.

Despite losing Evin Lewis early, the Falcons reached 46 during the powerplay before Tim Robinson helped steady the innings with 40 from 30 balls.

Tajinder Dhillon then took charge, smashing 62 from just 37 deliveries. His match-changing innings included seven fours and a six and kept the Falcons within striking distance of victory.

The contest went down to the wire, with the Falcons losing two wickets in the final over.

With the outcome still hanging in the balance, Shamar Springer completed two runs from the final delivery to seal the thrilling victory.

Winning Start for Captain Fabian Allen

The match was also Fabian Allen’s first as captain of the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, and he praised his players for delivering under pressure.

“It was a tight call at the end, but a win is a win,” Allen said. “I am happy with the way the guys bowled and the way they batted. Alzarri came in with a crucial spell and bowled brilliantly, while Tajinder delivered with the bat. It was a good chase.”

Allen said starting his captaincy with a victory was particularly satisfying but acknowledged that he will continue learning as the tournament progresses.

“The first win is always a great feeling. I am happy with it, and as we go forward, I will continue to learn from the experience.”

The victory gives the Falcons valuable early momentum in the tournament.

They return to action at the Arnos Vale Stadium on Sunday, August 9, when they face the Saint Lucia Kings at 7 p.m.
