Antigua and Barbuda has officially launched celebrations marking its 45th anniversary of Independence, with a programme of cultural, educational, sporting and community activities planned in the lead-up to November 1.

The celebrations are being held under the theme “Renaissance: Rooted in Pride, Bounded by Prosperity for All,” which was unveiled alongside the official anniversary logo and calendar of events during a ceremony at Government House on Thursday evening.

Minister of Sports and Creative Industries Dwayne George said the milestone should serve as an opportunity for national renewal, while reinforcing the importance of ensuring that the country’s continued progress and prosperity benefit all citizens.

As Antigua and Barbuda reflects on 45 years as an independent nation, Governor General Sir Rodney Williams highlighted the progress made since the country gained Independence from Britain on November 1, 1981.

Sir Rodney described 45 as an age “old enough to have memories and young enough to have dreams,” encouraging citizens to reflect on the achievements of previous generations while remaining focused on the work still ahead.

He also urged each generation to play its part in the ongoing process of nation-building as Antigua and Barbuda moves closer to its 50th anniversary of Independence.

A series of activities will be held over the coming months, bringing together communities across the country through events celebrating national identity, history, culture, education and sport.

The programme will culminate with the country’s 45th Independence Day celebrations on November 1.
