The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is expected to receive up to five additional lawyers as the Government moves to strengthen Antigua and Barbuda’s capacity to prosecute criminal cases.
Cabinet approved the recruitment amid growing concerns about gun crime, serious offences and the effectiveness of the wider criminal justice system.
The Government said stronger legislation and more effective policing must be supported by a properly resourced prosecution service capable of preparing and presenting criminal cases efficiently.
Cabinet also approved a professional training programme for prosecutors, particularly those handling serious and complex criminal matters.
The initiative is intended to ensure that prosecutors have the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively represent the State. It will complement the recruitment of the additional attorneys.
Meanwhile, two police officers will receive full scholarships to pursue law degrees at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus.
Upon graduation, the officers are expected to join the prosecution team within the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Cabinet said the initiatives form part of a broader strategy to improve criminal prosecutions and strengthen every stage of the justice system.
