Concerns about bail, sentencing and repeat offenders are expected to be addressed during Parliament’s sittings next Monday and Tuesday, according to Cabinet.

Senior police officers raised the issues again during Wednesday’s meeting with Cabinet, particularly in relation to people suspected of serious crimes and those who repeatedly offend.

Cabinet said it took note of the concerns and considered them part of the wider national discussion on crime and the administration of justice.

The Cabinet notes did not specify what legislation or proposals Parliament would consider. The discussions took place as the government examined measures to strengthen policing, border security and the response to illegal firearms.
