Minister of Sports and Creative Industries Dwayne George has pledged his support for two national cultural projects following a meeting with cultural advisor Dr. Hazra Medica on Tuesday, September 22.
Dr. Medica, who manages both projects, briefed the minister on work to map Antigua and Barbuda’s creatives as part of a Cultural Information System. She also updated him on the Warri Revival Programme, supported through UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Fund.
The Warri programme aims to introduce the traditional game throughout the public school system and train 550 students through the Antigua and Barbuda Warri Academy.
Dr. Medica said she intends to pursue a UNESCO nomination for Warri later this year to strengthen its recognition as part of Antigua and Barbuda’s cultural identity. George said he would use his ministerial influence to help bring both projects to completion.
Mapping all the creatives is a good move too. We have plenty talented people in Antigua, but sometimes nobody even knows who they are or what they can do. Give them a proper platform.
