“Chantel Was Almost Home”: A Family’s Reflection

Police at the crime scene in the wee hours of the morning

“She was almost home. She just did not make it home”. These were the words of a relative of Chantel Crump, whose lifeless body was discovered in bushes at Weatherhills in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Chantel was an innocent child with a bright future ahead of her, a life tragically cut short for reasons that remain unclear.

As her body was placed in the hearse, family members screamed in anguish, while others who could not cry out allowed their tears to flow silently.

Young Chantel, just 9 years old, was abducted while walking home from school with her friends.

“They said she waved goodbye to them through the window of the gray car that drove away with her. She didn’t know that this was her last goodbye—to them, to us, to the world,” a family member shared with Antigua News at the scene.

The motive behind  Crump’s murder is still unknown.

A man and woman are in custody, and police are expected to issue a statement soon.

Just imagine your child left your home that morning. The usual protocols probably happened or maybe it was a busy morning didn’t get to do that. So you make sure her lunch bag is packed, uniforms set and all. She leaves for school and you go about your business. It’s 4 O clock and the usual time she is expected to be home she isn’t. Worried slightly you are but you don’t make it a obvious, 5 O clock you start looking through the windows, down the road, ask her little friend if they saw her, 6 pm your heart racing as the sun begins to set and darkness creeps up behind the sun. It’s now 7pm and you calling everybody you can and know. Even to those you don’t like, you are forced to call. From then onwards, it’s no sleep, no happiness, no joy, no laughter. No peace of mind to get you through. I have never experienced that before but I can assure you a life for life! I would not rest!
