According to the President’s Physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Biden tested positive on Saturday morning in a letter to the White House.
“As described last week, acknowledging the potential for so-called “rebound” COVID positivity observed in a small percentage of patients treated with PAXLOVID, the President increased his testing cadence, both to protect people around him and to assure early detection of any return of viral replication,” Dr. O’Connor said in the Letter.
After testing negative on Tuesday evening, Wednesday morning, Thursday morning, and Friday morning, the President tested positive late Saturday morning, by antigen testing. This in fact represents “rebound’ positivity,” he added.
President Biden also acknowledged the rebound on Twitter, saying a small minority of people experience it.
“Folks, today I tested positive for COVID again. This happens with a small minority of folks. I’ve got no symptoms but I am going to isolate for the safety of everyone around me. I’m still at work, and will be back on the road soon,” Biden said on Twitter.
Dr. Kevin said the President was not having symptoms of the virus but would maintain strict isolation for now.
REBOUND CASES OF COVID-19
The CDC has issued a Health Alert on the rebound of Covid-19 cases treated with Paxlovid.
“COVID-19 rebound has been reported to occur between 2 and 8 days after initial recovery and is characterized by a recurrence of COVID-19 symptoms or a new positive viral test after having tested negative,” the CDC said.
“A brief return of symptoms may be part of the natural history of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) infection in some persons, independent of treatment with Paxlovid and regardless of vaccination status.”
No additional treatment is recommended for rebound cases except for the basic Covid-19 guidelines like isolation and wearing a protective mask. The President is not showing symptoms of the virus and he is expected to test negative soonest.
