Residents in Antigua and Barbuda have been told not to consume magnesium citrate saline laxative oral solution due to microbial contamination.  

That pharmaceutical product has been recalled and the Consumer Affairs Division confirmed that the solution has already been detected in the country.

“The manufacturer has expanded their voluntary recall. It is now a worldwide recall of all flavors. The affected product according to them includes all flavors including cherry and grapes flavor. It also comes in the 10 oz or 296 ml bottles with all expiration dates,” said Jo-Ann Peters, a spokesperson for the Consumer Division.

She said preliminary investigations by the Division have revealed that the recalled laxative is in Antigua and Barbuda and consumers are advised not to consume this product.  

“The product which comes under several brand names has been found in Antigua and Barbuda. We have had a report from one consumer who has purchased the product locally. We have already moved to contact the ministry of health so that can they move and discard these products,” she said.

The Division is advising consumers who may have purchased the product not to consume it, but rather return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.  

“Manufactures have warned consumers that they should take note of this recall. There are three cases in which persons have been affected and have been experiencing adverse reactions. Consumers should not consume these products,” she said.

Consumers can return their product to the retailers for a  refund .
