At least 13 dead, 21 injured in Russian school shooting

At least 13 people have died, including seven children, in a school shooting in central Russia. The incident happened in Izhevsk, located in the Udmurtia region of Russia.

An investigative committee said 34-year-old Artyom Kazantsev was responsible for the incident. In a statement released on Monday, the committee said Mr. Artyom, a graduate of the same school, was carrying two guns and was wearing a black t-shirt with “Nazi symbols.”
Apart from the reported casualties, 14 children and seven adults got injured during the shooting and are currently receiving treatment.

Governor of the region, Alexander Brechalov, said “There are victims among the children, there are wounded too,” adding that the shooter later killed himself with one of the guns.

Spokesperson to the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, in a statement released on behalf of President Putin, described the incident as “inhuman.”
“President Putin deeply mourns the deaths of people, children, at a school where there was a terrorist attack by a person, who apparently belongs to a neo-fascist group. The president wishes for the recovery of those injured as a result of this inhuman terrorist attack,” Peskov said on Monday.

Although school shootings are not so common in Russia, there have been a few cases in the last few years. In April 2022, a man killed two kindergarten students and a teacher in Ulyanovsk before killing himself.
