During Tuesday’s parliamentary session, Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin emphasized that despite a recent increase in criminal activities, Antigua and Barbuda remains one of the safest destinations in the Western Hemisphere.
He highlighted the government’s introduction of legislative measures aimed at dismantling gangs in the country.
This action was in response to the concerns raised in a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) report, which noted the prevalence of gang criminal activities and the associated challenges faced by several Caribbean countries including Jamaica, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana.
Sir Steadroy compared the situation in Antigua and Barbuda with other Caribbean nations, asserting that the country is not in a state of crisis and remains one of the safest destinations in the region.
He commended the government’s efforts in reducing criminal activities, particularly mentioning an intervention initiated by the Prime Minister to establish a truce among gang members in specific areas, resulting in a significant decrease in crime.
The Attorney General also praised the government’s stability and experience, highlighting the country’s capability to provide assistance in law enforcement to other Caribbean territories.
Therefore, his overall message was that Antigua and Barbuda, despite challenges, continues to be a safe and stable destination with a government committed to addressing criminal activities and maintaining public safety.
“…Benjamin emphasized that despite a recent increase in criminal activities, Antigua and Barbuda remains one of the safest destinations in the Western Hemisphere…”
According to what evidence? He seems to simply be stating an opinion, as nowhere in the article does it state he references any data to back up his words. What we hear with our ears and see with our eyes says the contrary.
