The United Progressive Party (UPP) is poised to unveil its candidate for the imminent by-election in the St Peter constituency sometime today says D Gisele Isaac, the chair of the party.
She told NewsCo that on Friday the party had a strategic meeting to discuss the matter.
The by-election comes on the heels of the death of the former MP Asot Michael, who was recently killed at Dry Hill estate.
Less than 24 hours before his burial, the government officially announced a date of January 14, 2025.
Isaac emphasized that the UPP has been gearing up for this by-election long before the official announcement of the date.
St Peter has historically leaned towards the Labour Party, presenting a challenge for the UPP.
Isaac acknowledged the party’s awareness of this but insisted that elections can yield unexpected results.
Asot Michael served the St Peter constituency for over five decades, running as an independent in the 2023 General Election.
In the previous election, Rawdon Turner from the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) garnered 899 votes, while Tevaughn “Peter Redz” Harriette from the UPP received 601 votes.
