The Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, has nominated Sylvanie Burton as the country’s next President. Skerrit confirmed that he has consulted with the Opposition Leader, Jesma Paul, to ensure that they both agree on the nominee for parliamentary approval.

According to the constitution, the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader must mutually agree on a nominee and submit their selection to the Speaker of Parliament.

If there is no agreement, any member of parliament can submit a nominee, but Burton’s nomination has the support of the majority government.

Once the National Assembly confirms her appointment, Burton will become Dominica’s first female and indigenous head of state.

Burton, the current Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environmental, Rural Modernisation, and Kalinago Upliftment, will succeed Charles Savarin, who has served two five-year terms and will leave office on October 1.

At 58 years old, Burton will be the ninth President of Dominica.
