Dr. Ruby Lake-Richards

Dr. Ruby Lake-Richards, a renowned medical practitioner from Antigua and Barbuda, has passed away at the age of 102.

She was one of the first 33 students to pursue a medical degree at the University College of the West Indies in 1948, and she received her medical degree in 1954.

Dr. Lake-Richards was one of only two students from Antigua and Barbuda in her cohort, and she was one of ten women.

She went on to specialize in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at McGill University in Canada and received her Fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1977.

Her medical career spanned over six decades, during which she worked in Antigua, Trinidad, and Canada.

Dr. Lake-Richards received Antigua and Barbuda’s second-highest national award and an honorary Doctor of Science degree from UWI.

She continued practicing medicine until the age of 95 and retired in 2015.

The government has agreed to give her an official funeral similar to the one given to Dr Reginald Alford Walwyn, also from her graduating class, in November 2021

R.I.P. Dr. Richards. I remember you so well. We worked together at Douglas hospital for quite a few years. You were always so kind.
