Dwayne George Sworn in as Senator
Dwayne George, the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party caretaker for St Mary’s South, has been appointed as the newest Government senator.
He was sworn in at Government House this morning, following the departure of Caleb Gardiner who has taken up a diplomatic post in Washington D.C.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who also leads the ABLP, has stated that George will serve in Parliament’s Upper House until the pending by-election in St Mary’s South.
The Prime Minister is confident that George will win the by-election and return the seat to the ABLP column, as he has already started working hard in the constituency.
Some critics have raised concerns about George’s decision to switch political allegiance to the ABLP.
However, Prime Minister Browne has defended his decision and pointed out that similar instances have occurred in the past across both major political parties.
George, a newcomer to the political scene in Antigua and Barbuda, has recently joined the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) with a mission to improve St. Mary’s South.
He used to be a member of the United Progressive Party (UPP) but switched sides about two weeks ago because of what he said is the ABLP’s recognition of talent and its promise to nurture potential.
George praised Prime Minister Gaston Browne for identifying and supporting promising individuals.
He and the ABLP leader “seized the opportunity” to help their community.
George replaced Senator Samantha Marshall, who withdrew from the by-election race because of personal issues related to her family.
Marshall’s significant loss in the January general election may have also influenced her decision.
In the upcoming by-election, George will compete against Kelvin Simon, a former MP for St. Mary’s South.
It is interesting to note that George had previously helped Simon during his election campaign, demonstrating his involvement in politics even before becoming a candidate himself.
Although George is primarily known as a professional bodybuilder, he emphasized his diverse skill set, including a degree in economics and fluency in two languages, making him a well-rounded candidate.
George is confident that he can bring a wealth of attributes and accolades to the table, making him the candidate that St. Mary’s South needs.
As the by-election approaches, the political landscape in St. Mary’s South is gearing up for an intriguing contest between George and Simon.
