A man who wreaked havoc in St. John’s last week has been sentenced to one year in prison.
The man in question, Daniel Joseph, caused serious damage to a Honda Civic parked on South Street on June 7.
The incident took place in high daylight and was caught on camera.
Surveillance footage showed the man releasing air from two left tyres and then repeatedly hitting the car’s windshields and right-side windows.
All of this happened at around 3:30 pm, just an hour after the owner of the car parked and left for work.
The complainant was alerted by someone in the area about the damage after the defendant had already left the scene.
The matter was reported to the police who apprehended the culprit after identifying him through the video footage.
Joseph was found near Pita Pocket on Popeshead Street and was arrested and charged with malicious damage.
The damages to the vehicle are said to be worth $3200.
The man was sent to prison for a year after he told the court that he was drunk at the time of committing the crime and was presently in need of another.
He said he believed that the alcohol caused him to become angry because it led him to remember an incident where the owner of the car and some other men beat him.
