Sir Richie receives a Doctor of Laws from UWI

A son of the soil has received an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) from the University of the West Indies for his contribution to sports.

Former captain of the West Indies cricket team Antiguan-born Sir Richie Richardson received the honor at a graduation ceremony on Saturday.

Speaking at the event Richardson, 60 told the new graduates that they should always remember their country, irrespective of the level of their talents

“You the graduates represent a special early cohort of students who took this opportunity and decided to harness your strength throughout the Covid pandemic amongst many challenges and emerged here today, victorious and ready to have a positive impact on many. You are the beginning of a cultural change in your families, communities, and countries have to achieve higher education,” he said.

Richard received the honor along with a veteran Vincentian singer, Alston “Becket” Cyrus.

“Our levels of determination, drive, and love for sport and music lead us to our successes. We have excelled and let the world know about our successes throughout cricket and music. Now it is your turn to find your niche and excel at it. Today marks you,” he added.

Richardson told students that they should consider this as they move forward. “The first is patriotism. Never forget where you came from and the opportunities that came about because your people are your country,” he said.

He also admonished the graduates to give back to communities and serve as mentors for the younger generation.
