Real Madrid defeated Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal 5-3 in the Club World Cup final on Saturday in Morocco to win the tournament a record five times, with two goals each from Federico Valverde and Vinicius Jr. and one from Karim Benzema.

The attacking prowess of Carlo Ancelotti’s side was simply too much for their opponents to handle, attempting 11 shots at goal and having almost 70% of the ball possession, it was largely a one-sided contest at the Prince Moulay Abdallah stadium.

The European Champions opened the scoring early in the match in the 13th minute when Vinicius got in behind the defense and scored from close range after Valverde and Benzema combined to set the ball up for him.

Valverde doubled Real’s lead in the 18th minute on the rebound but Al Hilal hit back eight minutes later with a goal from former Porto striker Moussa Marega after sliding a shot past Andriy Lunin, who should have done more to keep it out.

The Saudi Arabian team briefly appeared to be going to put their more prestigious opponents to the test, with Marega and Vietto creating trouble one-on-one against Antonio Rudiger and Eduardo Camavinga. Still, Madrid picked up the pace in the second half and won in thrilling fashion.

Following the interval, Vinicius grabbed center stage, showcasing his talents against the struggling Al Hilal defense, getting the fans up and cheering whenever he sprinted down the left channel.

He set up Benzema early in the second half with a beautiful cross using the outside of his boot and the French man finished expertly from close range.

Uruguayan midfielder Valverde scored his second goal in the 58th minute thanks to an elegant pass from defender Dani Carvajal.

Vietto pulled another goal back for Al Hilal on another attack five minutes later. However, any dreams of a comeback were quickly shattered as Vinicius scored another goal for Real in the 69th minute with a clinical strike after playing the ball through a defender’s legs.

10 minutes later, Vietto scored his second goal of the game to cap off a high-scoring contest that the Moroccan supporters obviously enjoyed.

A moment of relief from a tough La Liga season

After winning the European Super Cup in August, Madrid’s convincing victory on Saturday secured them their second trophy of the season.

It also offered a much-needed relief from a tough La Liga season, in which they now trail rival Barcelona by eight points.

Madrid also won three Intercontinental Cups, which use to be a match between South American and European champions, and was merged with the Club World Cup in 2005. These victories came in 1960, 1998, and 2002.

Bayern Munich and AC Milan, who each have four titles in the two competitions, are the next most successful teams.

“We are very happy, for the eighth time Madrid are champions of the world, it was what we had to do,” Ancelotti told Telecinco.

“We’re happy, it was a good game. We had a lot of quality up front.

“I think we were good up front, with Vinicius, Karim, Valverde, who got two, up top the team had mobility and quality.”
