25-year-old chef who was accused and charged of raping his teenage co-worker was found not guilty by the majority of a mixed jury on Thursday.

According to reports, both the victim and the accused worked at a villa in English Harbour and the court heard that on her 17th birthday, there was a celebration for her on the job

The court heard that on the night of the alleged incident, the victim, consumed alcohol as customary during celebrations, even displaying her skills of being able to balance a bottle of liquor on her buttocks. The victim however said she wasn’t intoxicated.

The man who was the assistant chef at the villa was asked by the victim whether she could stay overnight. She decided to stay in the staff bedroom where there are two beds.

The court heard that the victim decided that she wanted to share the same bed with the accused and they both spent time looking at birthday wishes and listening to voice notes on her phone

After some time, the accused claimed that he and the victim began kissing and eventually engaged in oral sex. They turned off the lights and proceeded to have sexual intercourse.

However, when they were about to change positions, the girl ran off the bed, went into the bathroom, and locked herself in. She refused to let him in and kept crying continuously

The accused told the court that he thought he had hurt his co-worker so he went to seek help from a female who would perhaps understand the emotions of women better.

He said the next day the matter was reported to the police that he had raped his co-worker.

Justice Madame Ann-Maria Smith heard the matter. The accused was represented by Wendel Robinson assisted by Merrise McDougal

The Acting Director of Public Shannon Jones-Gittens represented the Crown.

When we’re young and careless we suffer the consequences of our immature behaviour

What is the age of someone who should be served and drinking alcohol in Antigua and Barbuda? The person(s) serving the alcohol didn’t realize that the teenager had consumed enough alcohol to stopping serving her. Or the party was a self-service event? I hope the young lady has learned her lesson and the consequences of drinking alcohol taught her not to mess with it. It seems that both parties had feelings for each other for a while, and used the intoxicated or alcohol situation to act on those feelings. At the age of 17, she shouldn’t be drinking or consuming that amount of alcohol.

The fact that the young lady was sleeping, she could not help herself, she was helpless and all I see is everyone picking aside because a bunch of strangers who are called jurors made the no guilty verdict…this world is certainly coming to an end, the injustice, the bias behavior because they don’t wanna see the young man go to jail…the young man should go to jail because he is rapist, and forever will be and one way or the other it will be proven
