A teacher in Guyana pulled a cutlass on a student and a parent, in what she said was an act of self-defense.
The teacher, Kimone Gentle is the third educator to be attacked in the last two weeks and the fifth this year.
In a video that went viral on social media, a student and his parent were seen attacking the teacher.
Moments later the teacher went outside and returned wielding a cutlass and could be seen heading toward the classroom. She was subdued by her colleagues.
This has led the Guyana Teachers Union to call on the Ministry of Education and Guyana Police Force to protect teachers
The Houston Secondary School teacher was later arrested and released.
Following her release from police custody she told reporters that “this thing has become the new COVID”
The female teacher maintained she was attacked.
The Union in a Facebook post said: “It’s a total shame to see that a female teacher had to go to an extreme to defend herself at her place of work. The same place where teachers are expected to educate and keep learners safe, they are unsafe.”
There have also been calls for a better security system in schools and for legislative reform to address violence against teachers
