Students who sat this year’s Grade Six National Assessment has done well in terms of the grades recorded in the four core subject areas.
Head of the Measurement and Evaluation Unit Ineta Francis shared the statistics during a news conference Friday.
In 2022 there was a 65 percent pass rate in Language Arts, that number is 67 this year, an improvement in this regard.
In 2022 the score for Mathematics was 56 compared to 61 this year, Science 62 in 2022, and 61 in 2023.
Similarly, for Social Studies the score was 69 in 2022 for this year the score was 72.
Director of Education Clare Browne commended the efforts of teachers, students, and their parents for their resilience.
He also stated that during the term the ministry also appointed three people to the Mathematics Unit to provide support to teachers in all schools on the island.
Some of the interventions he outlined included, Item writing sessions, training, and assessment, writing and drafting of sample questions based on the objectives across grades 2,4 and 6, and the disparity between the existing standard and that of the Math Unit.
“In addition, grade six teachers’ meetings addressing SBA approach and content areas, instructional approach webinars, and improved school visits to provide further assistance to specific teachers and students”.
“The areas that were highlighted were broad areas and they focus mainly on the foundation content. Those were some of the interventions that occurred in the academic year that was”, Browne said.
The director also stated that the ministry will not relent, but will continue to dwell on the success recorded.
Education Minister Daryll Mathew said the ministry, teachers, and parents recognized that something needed to be done to achieve acceptable results in specific areas which has been achieved.
He said they intend to continue to build on these successes.
“We are accustomed to working hard and getting great results and if we continue to collaborate and work together, we can really achieve great things in this country. We will not take these results for granted we will not rest on our laurels. We will continue to rally around our students as a ministry, we also encourage the community to take ownership in our children and our institutions and we will continue to see great results,” Mathew said.
