Tension ran high in St. Mary’s South yesterday as passionate supporters of three political parties competed for success in the by-election.

Amidst the chaos, Kelvin ‘Shugy’ Simon, the victor in the polls for the United Progressive Party, was reportedly threatened by a police officer.

In an interview on Observer AM after his win, Simon revealed that “a police officer who was bodyguarding Gaston Browne looked at me yesterday and made a cut-throat gesture” through a car window.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said thereafter, revealing his intention to report the matter to the Commissioner of Police.

Just hours after securing his second victory in the constituency, Simon celebrated with his constituents and took the opportunity to thank them for their unwavering support publicly.

“The real MVPs are the people out there. I’m just the person they believe in as a leader,” he remarked, reflecting his elation.

“I feel vindicated. I believe I’m leading the best constituency,” he added.

In the final tally, Simon garnered 1,065 votes, while his opponent from the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party, Dwayne George, received 891 votes, and the Democratic National Alliance’s Andrew Antonio secured 8 votes.

Simon is set to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament in the near future.
