Following the shock cancer diagnosis released yesterday (5 February) from Buckingham Palace concerning King Charles III, leaders from around the world have been sending their best wishes and messages of support.
The UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had already been informed prior to the news being announced to the public, so he was naturally the first to express his shock and sadness, but also relief that the illness had been caught early.
He has been followed by leading world figures, all concerned and eager to declare their own sadness and offer their respective countries hopes for his swift recovery. Leaders from amongst others: the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, the Bahamas, France, Israel, and Ireland have all been quoted since the news broke.
There have been no further updates on the King’s health thus far.
Remaining positive
His Majesty’s communications secretary made it clear that after the statement put out by the Palace, there will not be a “running commentary” of his condition, but there would be updates from time to time as to how his treatment is progressing. What was stressed and has been repeated, is that everyone, especially The King himself, is determined to stay positive.
Stepping back from public-facing engagements is largely being attributed to a cautious approach being adopted by his team of doctors, who are keen to ensure Charles avoids contracting any possible infections.
Good wishes from the leaders
US President Joe Biden said briefly that he was “concerned” and would be “talking to him, God willing”, before later tweeting: “Navigating a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship takes hope and absolute courage. Jill and I join the people of the United Kingdom in praying that His Majesty experiences a swift and full recovery.”
Canada’s Justin Trudeau, said he along with fellow Canadians, was thinking of His Majesty and wanted to send their “very best wishes” and hopes for a “fast and full recovery.”
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon of New Zealand, posted on X: “On behalf of all Kiwis I wish His Majesty all the very best for a speedy recovery.”
Australian concern
In Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who has previously declared that he believes an Australian citizen should replace the British monarch as the country’s head of state, said he was “thinking of him and his family in this very hard time”.
He went on to say: “Australians know that His Majesty King Charles has always reached out to us in our country’s toughest moments, showing kindness and care for those doing it tough. We wish him well for a speedy recovery.”
French friendship
Charles is known to have a very warm relationship with French President, Emmanuel Macron and he also wished the King a “speedy recovery”, tweeting that the “thoughts of France are with the British people”.
Inspirational reference from Bahamas
Philip Davis, the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, was very sincere in his message of support, stating: “On behalf of the people of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, my wife, Ann, and I offer heartfelt prayers and good wishes for the swift recovery of His Majesty King Charles III.”
Continuing, he added: “His Majesty’s openness in sharing his diagnosis of cancer is an inspiration, as it brings attention to a challenge faced by many around the world.”
Queen and family in thoughts
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, “I join the people of India in wishing speedy recovery and good health to His Majesty King Charles III.”
In a statement from Irish President, Michael D Higgins, he was said to be: “very sorry and concerned to hear of King Charles’ medical diagnosis” and he sent his best wishes on behalf of the people of Ireland for his medical treatment and for his full recovery, “as well as to Queen Camilla and his family.”
Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz sent “prayers and wishes for the full and fast recovery of the friend of the Jewish people, King Charles.”
Former US President, Donald Trump, described Charles as a “wonderful man” when learning of his diagnosis. “I got to know him well during my presidency, and we all pray that he has a fast and full recovery”.
Workaholic
The Palace are likely to try and show the King continuing to work behind the scenes as much as they can to ensure that negative speculation does not get a chance to gather any sort of momentum.
He is also almost certainly going to be difficult to be persuaded to take complete rest as he is well-known as a workaholic, so will be insisting on doing as much as his medical team will permit.
