The future of Royal Caribbean International’s (RCI) investment in a project at one of the nation’s most popular beaches remains uncertain.
Back in 2019, RCI had announced plans to introduce a new destination concept, The Royal Beach Club, in Antigua.
The company had even signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Antigua and Barbuda for the new property, which was intended to be located along a half-mile beachfront near Fort James.
However, the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020 disrupted these plans, delaying the project’s anticipated opening in 2021.
Minister of Information Melford Nicholas recently disclosed that the project is under review.
“The matter is up for review, and at some point in time, it will either be a green thumbs-up for that particular project to execute it or if the RCI is not able to execute as planned, then we will consider that a closed issue and move towards another level of development,” he stated.
Initially designed for Royal Caribbean International guests, The Royal Beach Club at Fort James was meant to offer a beach experience with the cruise line’s signature amenities, combined with elements inspired by the local culture.
Planned features included entertainment, private cabanas, a pool, and a swim-up bar.
Will someone please explain why we have to develop every inch of Antigua and Barbuda? WHY ARE WE CONSTANTLY LEVERAGING OUR CHILDREN’S CHILDREN FUTURES??? Also, why are we never adequately prepared when dealing with international conglomerates? We swim in a small pond — they swim in a vast ocean!!! We are outmaneuvered, time after time!!! Always playing smart, and not even CLEVER!!! 🧐🤨
