Former UPP Leader Harold Lovell, MP Richard Lewis, Leader Jamal Pringle and Former Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer
The upcoming United Progressive Party leadership race is heating up as two of the main contenders, Jamaal Pringle and Richard Lewis, have pledged to work together despite the outcome of the party’s convention next month.
Both Pringle and Lewis have been nominated to contest the party’s leadership, with the convention scheduled to take place on April 20 and 21.
According to Senator Shawn Nicholas, the General Secretary of the Party, both candidates met following the confirmation of their nominations.
She noted that the party has learned from past experiences and is working to prevent history from repeating itself.
The position of Public Relations Officer, held by Damani Tabor, and the General Secretary position are unopposed so far, while the position of Chairperson of the party is being contested.
The leadership race was thrown into controversy back in March when Lewis secured the endorsement of key members of the party, much to the surprise of the party leader, Pringle.
The endorsement came in the form of a letter bearing the signatures of several Caretakers, including Alex Browne, Franz DeFreitas, Johnathan Joseph, and Sean Bird, endorsing Lewis citing his vision, strategic plans, and ability to challenge the current administration led by Gaston Browne.
Tevaughn Harriette and others also followed suit.
Pringle told local media that he was surprised by the actions of his colleagues, and that the matter was an internal process.
Pearl Quinn-Williams, a third contender for leadership, withdrew from the race shortly after, stating that her failure to garner the support of her branch spurred her decision to withdraw.
Since then, a few party stalwarts who endorsed Lewis have also backpedaled on their support, adding more intrigue to the upcoming convention
