The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus is set to introduce a diverse range of new programmes to its academic curriculum in the upcoming year.
The most notable addition is the establishment of an Academy of Sports, which is expected to be a game-changer for the campus, particularly for males in the society.
Principal of the UWI FIC, Professor C Justin Robinson, announced this exciting development at the Campus Council meeting, outlining the Academy’s aim to become a Centre of Excellence in sports for Antigua and Barbuda and the OECS. These are the primary markets that the university serves.
The Academy of Sports will offer an array of courses in sports-related subjects ranging from bachelor of science degrees to masters’ degrees. These courses include BSc. in coaching, BSc. in sports kinetics, BSc. in sports leadership and management, Sports marketing certificate, MSc. sports and exercise medicine physiotherapy, and MSc. sports business management.
Professor Robinson emphasized the importance of the Academy of Sports, particularly in appealing to males.
He stated that while three-quarters of the UWI students are females, the university must offer programming that appeals to males. The Academy of Sports will cater to this non-traditional area, offering courses that are tailored to their interests.
Apart from the Academy of Sports, UWI FIC will also introduce a range of Masters of Philosophy and Doctorate programmes.
In the School of Humanities and Education, these degrees will be in history and in education. In the School of Business and Management, these higher degrees will be in economics, management, political science, psychology, and sociology.
UWI FIC will also offer advanced degrees in collaboration with the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies in the areas of development studies, social policy, economic development policy, and governance and public policy.
Overall, the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus is paving the way for a more diverse and inclusive academic experience.
The introduction of the Academy of Sports and other new programmes ensures that students have access to a wide range of courses catered to their interests.
