Over the weekend, LIAT 2020, a newly established airline by the Antigua and Barbuda government, completed a series of training flights under the observation of the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA).
These flights are an essential part of the process that LIAT 2020 needs to follow to attain its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) before it can commence regular scheduled flights.
Sources reveal that two flights were launched from VC Bird International Airport on Saturday afternoon to St Kitts and back, while another two similar flights were made on Sunday morning.
These flights were closely monitored by ECCAA, the regional authority responsible for all aviation-related matters in the Eastern Caribbean.
During a live radio show, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced the news of the successful training flights, which was met with a wave of congratulatory comments and postings from the public.
LIAT 2020 is a joint venture between the Antigua and Barbuda government and Nigerian airline, Air Peace.
As part of its contribution to LIAT 2020, Air Peace will provide three aircraft to the new airline, which are expected to arrive in Antigua and Barbuda shortly.
Further training flights are expected to take place during the week, as LIAT 2020 works towards fulfilling all requirements ahead of the granting of the AOC.
