As LIAT 2020 approaches its official launch, it has scheduled demonstrative flights this week to obtain Air Operations Certificates (AOC).
The interim chairman of LIAT 2020, Ambassador Daven Joseph, stated to the media in Antigua that the airline will conduct two flights this week.
These flights, in conjunction with the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA), will be used as a basis for the regulatory body to issue the certificates.
The demo flights will take place on Thursday and Friday, with one aircraft flying to St Kitts on Thursday and the other to St Lucia on Friday.
The officials from ECCAA, along with LIAT 2020 staff, will be onboard the ATR aircraft, which the airline acquired from the defunct LIAT (1974) Ltd.
The purchase was facilitated through the Caribbean Development Bank, at a cost of $4.1 million USD each.
It is worth noting that LIAT 1974 Ltd ceased operations on January 24, 2024, under the supervision of court-appointed administrator Cleveland Seaforth.
Despite being a leading carrier in the subregion, the airline faced persistent financial challenges, leading to its demise and creating a significant gap in the market
The government of Antigua and Barbuda has since been actively involved in revitalizing the airline.
This includes a partnership with Nigerian carrier Air Peace, which has been instrumental in supporting the airline’s operations and growth.
With the upcoming launch of LIAT 2020, the aviation industry in the Caribbean region can expect to see a positive change.
