Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, has recently shared his strategic plan to develop infrastructure, with a significant focus on roads and water supply projects.
The plan aims to prioritize road repair and maintenance over the next year and ensure the efficient operation of key infrastructure projects.
To accomplish this, the government intends to hire 40 new individuals at Public Works, specifically to bolster road maintenance efforts and ensure that the patching of roads is done more efficiently.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that the employment of additional personnel would help the government have a “night crew” to facilitate road patching and maintenance.
Prime Minister Browne acknowledged the challenges posed by ongoing major road reconstruction activities, leading to regular patching and maintenance delays.
Thus, the government’s decision to hire new personnel aims to address these challenges and improve the overall condition of roads across the country.
Meanwhile there are plans to continue to address the water issues on the island to include a water plant to be supplied by the government of Japan, aimed at significantly boosting water supply by several hundred thousand gallons per day.
“We have a water plant to be supplied by the government of Japan in which we will be increasing the capacity at Urlings by a few more hundred thousand gallons a day. In addition, there is a firm in the United States in which we just signed a contract to build out a plant to supply three million gallons of water a day,” he said
In addition, there is also a regional entity that traveled to Antigua and Barbuda and wants to partner with the government with the Bethesda plant.
“I have to commend APUA because even if the water supply or capacity has not increased, one can see the destruction has improved significantly. There will always be issues from time to time, but the situation is not as dire as it was,” he said.
