The government has decided against granting full visa-free access to individuals from Bangladesh.

Foreign Minister Chet Greene during a recent media engagement with Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud of Bangladesh, had proposed a visa-free arrangement between the two countries.

But Minister of Information Melford Nicholas explained that, “The notion of having full visa-free access from Bangladesh was duly considered and not approved by the Cabinet.”

Reason being, “the idea that there could be an effluent of persons who would come to the jurisdiction that ultimately would cause concerns for some of our partners particularly in the Schengen Area in Europe.”

Nicholas mentioned that while full visa-free access was not approved, the Cabinet did consider the possibility of facilitating individuals with diplomatic status traveling from Bangladesh.

“I think we will look at that a little later down,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, the establishment of a consulate in Bangladesh later this year seems to still be on the cards as Nicholas said “it is consistent with our foreign policy.”

This move is expected to enhance cooperation between the two nations in tourism and investment, generating considerable excitement in Bangladesh.

The headline of this news is the invitation extended to cricket legend Sir Vivian Richards to participate in the consulate’s opening ceremony in Dhaka.

Richards remains immensely popular in the Indian subcontinent, and his presence is anticipated to enhance the event’s significance.
