St Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has hinted that his government may be providing financial assistance for the further development of LIAT 2020.
He said he would be holding talks with the government of Antigua and Barbuda. Pierre spoke to state media on Wednesday.
“I was speaking to Prime Minister Gaston Browne. St Lucia has a provision in its budget for support for airlines, I promised the prime minister that we would have some more discussions with him,” Pierre said.
He also went on to speak to the challenges of regional travel insisting there is a need for improvements in this regard.
“The issue of intraregional is a serious issue it is easier to get to Miami than it is to Antigua and this is ridiculous. So, I wish Antigua well, where are going to surely have discussions with Prime Minister Browne to see how we can work together”, the St Lucia Leader said.
Several other regional countries had, in the past pledged support to the development of LIAT 2020, but are yet to act on those commitments.
The government has partnered with Nigeria’s largest brand Air Peace to breathe fresh life into to new carrier which is now taking shape. The carrier achieved a major milestone this week after receiving its first two jet aircraft.
The two Embraer ERJ 145s, bearing registrations 5N-BVD and 5N-BXG, touched down at Antigua’s V.C. Bird International Airport within minutes of each other on Tuesday afternoon.
Both received a water cannon salute, traditionally used to celebrate milestones in aviation.
