Excessive Heat Possible for Antigua and Barbuda…Heat Watch in Effect 9:00 am to 4:30 pm until Saturday…
Forecaster Dale Destin told residents that they should brace for a hot next couple of days
He said in his latest forecast that light winds and high humidity may lead to an increase in the heat index, which could result in dangerously hot conditions and a potential rise in health problems, particularly for sensitive individuals.
An excessive heat watch is issued when there are favorable conditions for an excessive heat event within the next 24 to 72 hours, although the timing is still uncertain. For a watch to be issued, the heat index temperature threshold is 38 °C (100 °F) or higher for two or more consecutive days, with winds typically at 18 km/h or 11 mph or less. E
elderly people, young children, individuals with chronic illnesses such as heart conditions, breathing difficulties, and psychiatric illnesses, people who work or exercise in the heat, homeless people, and low-income earners are most at risk for health complications.
Heat illnesses such as heat stroke, exhaustion, fainting, cramps, rash, and edema can be prevented but can lead to long-term health issues and even death.
If symptoms of heat illness are present, such as dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting, headache, rapid breathing and heartbeat, or extreme thirst, it is important to move to a cool place immediately and drink liquids, preferably water.
Heat stroke is the most dangerous heat illness, with symptoms of complete or partial loss of consciousness or confusion and high body temperature. If caring for someone with these symptoms, call 911 right away.
While waiting for help, move the person to a cool place, apply cold water to the skin or clothing, and fan them as much as possible.
Everyone should stay alert and take precautions by staying cool and hydrated. It is important to regularly check on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbors.
Individuals who take medication or have a health condition should consult with their doctor to determine if they are at a higher risk of heat-related health complications and follow their recommendations.
This excessive heat watch will be updated accordingly, and a warning may be necessary. Keep an eye out for updates from the Meteorological Service through antiguamet.com, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube @abmetservice. Forecaster Dale Destin
