Lateefah George
The Cabinet has made it clear that it has no plans to engage in discussions pertaining to the unfortunate demise of Lateefah George – a patient at Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital.
This decision comes after the deceased’s family filed a lawsuit against the Attorney General, seeking answers and justice for their loved one.
Lionel Hurst, the Cabinet’s spokesperson, stated that the members are unlikely to divulge any information to the public until the lawsuit is resolved.
“When a matter is before the courts, the Cabinet members are very wary of making public statements about any particular matters before the court. If someone has sued the government through one of its agencies and sues the attorney general, it is clear the Cabinet members cannot make public statements,” Hurst said
He explained that usually, Cabinet members remain mum unless there is a settlement of some sort.
George, who was suffering from bipolar depression, passed away while seeking care at a government-operated mental institution.
The autopsy report revealed that her body had indications of brain trauma, oxygen deprivation, and infection, which the pathologist suggested may have been expedited by poison or chemicals.
The situation raises questions about the quality of care provided at government mental institutions and the safety measures in place to prevent such incidents from occurring.
Meanwhile, Hurst also expressed concern over the lack of discussion about establishing a facility for vagrants and the absence of a plan to address cases of vigilante justice.
The recent death of an unidentified vagrant due to vigilante justice has underscored the urgency of the matter.
The man was beaten after it was alleged that he inappropriately touched a student. He first lost one of his arms, then died days later in hospital.
