Prison Superintendent Lieutenant Trevor Pennyfeather has confirmed that the prison officer who intervened in a scuffle between two inmates at the penal institution is no longer employed at the facility.

The inmate Ricknaldo Isaac died on Saturday while receiving treatment at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center.

The incident is now under investigation.

Pennyfeather told state media on Tuesday Isaac was reportedly struck with a ball by another inmate, and even though the inmate apologized, it did not seem Isaac accepted the apology and instead became aggressive.

It also appeared that the intervention of the Prison Officer made matters worse.

“The officer in question basically went to intervene, and when he went to intervene, that resulted in a struggle between the officer and Isaac. From that struggle, he sustained the injuries,” Pennyfeather said.

The prison boss adds that the preliminary investigation revealed that it was necessary for the police to be involved, especially following the death of the inmate.
