Flash Flood Watch Upgraded to Warning

26 May 2024 - 10:59

A flash flood warning is currently in effect for low-lying and flood-prone areas of Antigua and Barbuda until 1pm today, Sunday, May 26th.

This means that moderate to major flooding is either occurring or imminent in the warned areas. Flash flooding is extremely dangerous.

If you are in low-lying or flood-prone areas, it is crucial to move to higher ground immediately.

Residents living along streams, creeks, low-lying, and flood-prone areas should take immediate precautions to safeguard life and property. Do not try to cross swiftly flowing waters or waters of unknown depth by foot or vehicle.

Keep in mind that just one foot of flowing water could be enough to sweep a car off the road. When encountering flooded roads, exercise extreme caution, and if in doubt, make the smart choice to turn around and not attempt to cross.

Unsettled conditions are being generated by a tropical wave over the area.

These conditions are expected to persist throughout the morning before gradually diminishing into the afternoon. An additional 2-3 inches of heavy downpours are possible, which could lead to moderate to major flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services will continue to monitor the weather situation. Please stay tuned to local radio or television for warning updates.
