The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) is honored to have increased its impact on the community by participating in the Antigua State College’s (ASC’s) Internship Programme for the first time.

For the past six (6) weeks, two students from the tertiary institution’s Business Department, Kiyana Edwards and Chani Martin, were attached to ABEC’s Public Relations Department and Secretariat respectively.

From April 22nd – June 2nd , both young ladies were actively involved in carrying out a variety of assigned functions in the departments.

In a gesture of goodwill and well wishes, ABEC presented Edwards and Martin with a token of appreciation and a creative Certificate of Participation during an informal ceremony.

ABEC’s Deputy Chairman, Mr. Eugene Francis and Supervisor of Elections, Mr. Ian Hughes, collectively expressed that ABEC is pleased to further broaden its scope and provide an environment for the interns to gain hands on experience in a professional atmosphere while at the same time learning pertinent details about the roles and functions of ABEC and the electoral
system.

Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Elisa Graham, noted that both young ladies were very willing and eager to learn and added that the programme fits well with ABEC’s overall thrust to educate and sensitize the public about its operations.

She added more specifically, that ABEC is also pleased to play a critical role in molding young minds, since the understanding of the entire democratic
process begins with our youth.

Both interns expressed their overall excitement and satisfaction with their experience at ABEC.

“During our time at ABEC, we were challenged, motivated and inspired every step of the way. We also had the opportunities to bring our ideas to the table and seeing them being used, without any pressure at all.

We learned about the operations of ABEC and also why its important for us as young people to participate in the voting process. We really had a great time and experience”, they said collectively.
