Despite pushback from opposing forces, the government seems to be moving right along with its plans to open the airport on the Sister Ilse of Barbuda

On Wednesday, the Cabinet discussed the readiness of the Barbuda International Airport for welcoming incoming flights.

It was noted that approval from the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) is pending and expected to be granted in approximately two weeks.

The airport project, which incurred a cost exceeding USD14 million, boasts a runway length of 6,100 feet.

Additionally, the Cabinet has approved the extension of the runway by an additional 2,000 feet to facilitate the landing of specific jet aircraft.

Campaigners fighting against Barbuda’s controversial international airport say their legal battle continues despite developers’ recent announcement that the facility will be operational within 30 days.

In February, John Mussington and Jackie Frank achieved a significant milestone when the Privy Council, the country’s highest court of appeal, affirmed their right to take legal action against the government.

Their lawsuit, initiated in 2018, contends that the airport project, intended to service private jets of affluent visitors, poses an ecological threat.

Notably, the airport is a joint venture between the central government and PLH developers.
