The government has announced plans to further expand Barbuda International Airport to accommodate larger aircraft while it awaits official approval from the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCA).
Currently, the 6,100-foot runway can accommodate international flights from major carriers.
Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, Lionel Hurst, explained that the runway will soon be extended to welcome even bigger aircraft to the island.
“To enable bigger aircraft to land there, all the private jets that fly into Antigua can now land there and take off quite safely.”
He also noted that the ECCA will be providing this approval in about two weeks following their inspection of the airport and ensuring all safety measures are covered. Hurst said the Barbuda airport runway will total 8,000 feet after the extension.
In addition, LIAT 2020 has obtained its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and will also be making flights into Barbuda, which will have a great impact on the sister isle.
“With those two factors, we can see how Barbuda International Airport will become a reality. By the way, we plan to name the airport after someone, but that decision has not yet been made.
The ambassador foresees that more airlines will fly in once potential financial gains are recognized,” Hurst said.
