The Cabinet has recognized and commended the nurses at the University of the West Indies – Five Islands Campus (UWI-FI) for advocating for an enhanced certification process for practical nurses.
Based on their persuasive case, the University has decided to broaden its nursing program to include the opportunity for nurses to pursue a Master’s Degree in their field.
This advancement will enable nurses to elevate the standard of healthcare services and increase their professional and economic potential, all while receiving full scholarships.
For instance, with a Master of Science degree, nurses can qualify as certified Midwives.
This initiative aligns with the government’s goal of elevating the healthcare system in Antigua and Barbuda by ensuring that nurses are proficient at all levels without having to travel abroad, which was often a significant obstacle for them due to the separation from their families.
