A Cessna aircraft with a single engine crashed during take-off at Canefield Airport, located on the west coast of the island just outside the capital. Luckily, the pilot and his wife emerged from the incident unharmed.

The pilot described being pushed by strong winds during take-off, but managed to escape without injury.

Canefield Airport, which officially opened in 1982, is one of only two airports in the country, the other being Douglas Charles Airport on the northeast coast of Dominica. The authorities have initiated an investigation into the crash.

In July 2011, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit expressed that there were no plans to resume commercial operations at Canefield Airport due to financial concerns.

He emphasized that the airport was not financially viable, with the operating costs far exceeding the revenue generated.

Ultimately, Skerrit suggested that the people of Dominica would need to decide the fate of the airport, considering its contribution to the region.

Notably, Dominica is currently in the process of constructing an international airport on the island’s north-east coast.
