Antigua and Barbuda Education Officials Committed to Improving Math Performance in National Assessment

Education officials have again committed to working with the relevant stakeholders and others within the sector to improve performance in Mathematics at the Grade Six National Assessment level.

Director of Education Claire Browne said the work has started; however, it will take some time before the results materialise.

“If you look at several things, the trajectory indicates that we are heading in the right direction, we are on the move, we are on the right path we just need to keep there and not become daunted by somebody expecting a quick fix. Suddenly you just press a button and things change,” Browne said recently”.

The pass rate for Mathematics this year was 59% with 68% of students attaining marks over the pass mark of 50%.

Browne said he is pleased with the work of educators, students and other support systems and the work that had been done to improve interest in math.

“We would have conducted a wide range of consultations, widespread consultation. In addition to that we have been assisting teachers, building capacity   University of the West Indies Five Island Campus, everywhere we can get assistance we have been doing a lot of things paying a lot of attention to building up the capacity of our math teacher,” Browne said.
