Boys Training School to have a new name and new face when reopened

Samantha Marshall

The government is working toward the possible reopening of a rebranded Boys Training School before the end of the year.

Junior Minister in the Ministry of Social Transformation Senator Samantha Marshall told state television a significant amount of work was done to the facility. However, a recent theft has significantly affected the original opening timeframe.

The hope is to have the facility opened by the end of August.

“Just on the heels of it being open some furnishings had been delivered and unfortunately, we had a break-in which resulted in some damage also to the actual structure. So National Housing has been working with us and so they’ve gone back up to try and complete some of that work,”

When reopened the facility will be re-named to remove the stigma that the name attracts.

“So there is a training session happening now for the new staff that will be working at the boys training school. The reason is that we have to ensure that we meet that international standard,” Marshall added.

She maintains that the aim is to ensure boys at the facility are thoroughly engaged in both their educational and mental development enabling them to successfully reintegrate into society.

“We’ve had situations where persons have been at boys training school and have become 18 and then they have to find somewhere to go. That is not what we want. We want a situation where they are reintegrated back into the family structure, back into the community structure and not seen or termed as bad boys,” the Minister outlined.
