The trial of MP Asot Michael, concluded yesterday after hearing testimony from four witnesses.
Michael faces battery charges stemming from an alleged incident involving a female police officer.
The incident reportedly occurred during the early hours of August 5, 2023, at a summer event called RISE.
The officer, who was the first to testify in the All Saints Magistrates Court, alleged that Michael assaulted her while she was on duty.
In her testimony, the constable recounted noticing her colleague step back during a conversation.
Upon turning around, she saw the defendant shirtless and appearing intoxicated.
She claimed Michael grabbed her face, and when she removed his hand, he grasped her uniform shirt.
After she ordered him to release her, he allegedly staggered backward, tearing the top part of her shirt and exposing her cleavage.
The officer described how her attempt to report the incident to an inspector was ignored, leaving her feeling embarrassed and disrespected.
Additional witnesses corroborated the complainant’s account.
Following the prosecution’s case, the defence indicated their intention to file a no-case submission.
Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel is set to deliver a ruling on October 16.
If it was an ordinary citizen did that to a police officer, he or she would be in jail by now. I am happy that this police officer brought a charge against Mr Michael. This is to show no matter who you are the law is the law and it is for everyone.
Why does the magistrate have to wait until October to give her final ruling? Where is there justice for the ordinary citizens of this country?
