Air Quality Alert Issued as Saharan Dust Surge Hits

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Office has issued an air quality alert effective until tomorrow, warning residents of unhealthy air quality levels due to the third notable surge of Saharan dust this season.

The alert highlights concerns over particulate matter 2.5 and 10, which have pushed the air quality index to between 90 and 115, triggering a Level III alert.

According to the meteorological office, the threat of health problems is medium, primarily affecting sensitive groups such as asthmatics, individuals with respiratory issues, allergies, cardiovascular problems, and those prone to eye and skin irritations.

The office warns that these conditions could potentially cause significant health impacts.

The alert specifically identifies people with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children as the groups most at risk.

Health implications include an increased likelihood of respiratory symptoms in sensitive individuals, aggravation of heart or lung disease, and the potential for premature mortality in persons with cardiopulmonary disease and the elderly.

In response to these conditions, the meteorological office has issued the following cautions:

  1. Everyone should exercise caution, especially sensitive groups.
  2. Active children and adults, and people with heart or respiratory diseases such as asthma, should limit time outdoors and restrict outdoor activities.
  3. Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.
  4. When going outside, wearing a face mask rated to filter out PM 2.5 is recommended.

This surge of Saharan dust serves as a reminder of the impact global weather patterns can have on local air quality and public health.

Residents are urged to stay informed about air quality updates and take necessary precautions to protect their health during this period of decreased air quality.
