A surge of Saharan dust is forecast to affect air quality across Antigua and Barbuda from last night through Sunday, marking the 10th dust event of 2025, according to meteorologist Dale Destin.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service issued an air quality bulletin, warning that dust levels will cause air quality to drop to moderate levels with an Air Quality Index (AQI) ranging from 51 to 80, placing the islands at Alert Level II.

While health risks remain low for the general population, meteorologists are advising sensitive individuals to take precautionary measures during the dust event. Those most at risk include people with respiratory or heart conditions, elderly residents, and children.

The moderate air quality designation means that while most people can continue normal outdoor activities, those with respiratory conditions such as asthma may experience minor symptoms and should consider reducing extended outdoor exercise.

This latest dust surge continues a pattern of increased Saharan dust activity affecting the Caribbean region in 2025. The dust typically travels thousands of miles from the Sahara Desert in North Africa, carried by trade winds across the Atlantic Ocean.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about air quality conditions through the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service’s website at antiguamet.com and their social media channels.
