Antigua and Barbuda Dental Association Received a $21,342.00 Award for Its Sunny Smiles Project

The Antigua and Barbuda Dental Association has received $21,342 in cash and supplies for its Sunny Smiles Program which we has been taken into eight schools.

It is the highest award for the region from the International College of Dentists and Henry Schein, the largest dental supplier in the U.S.  For grades K – 3, the program is in the following schools:  Cobbs Cross Primary, Golden Grove Primary, Greenbay Primary, Holy Trinity in Barbuda, TN Kirnon Primary, Villa Primary, Golden Grove Primary, and Urlings Primary.

They hope to add additional schools in the last quarter of the year.

Part I has been completed and involves teaching prevention, nutrition education, and encouraging everyone to drink water and use local fruits and vegetables.

The children were given brushes, provided a healthy drink, and were shown the Sunny Smiles movie featuring the dentists and friends.

This movie will be sent to all schools in Antigua later in the year.

Part II of the program will involve examining each child and the application of fluoride to the teeth.

Data will be collected, noting decayed, missing, and filled teeth, and fillings and necessary dental care will be provided.

The Sunny Smiles Program was taken to the children at Holy Trinity in Barbuda.

In addition to prevention and nutrition education, fluoride was applied to each child’s teeth.

Did you know that a 12 oz. can of ginger ale has a sugar content of ¼ of a quart-size baggie filled with sugar?

Sugar intake must be limited, and everyone should brush at least twice daily with a soft toothbrush for two minutes to reduce cavities and to promote good health.   Follow the Association’s programs on www.abda.ag.
