Renovation work at the St. John’s Police Station will be delayed because some of the contractors were relocated to work at another site, according to Commissioner of Police Atlee Rodney.
He emphasized the importance of reopening the station, which serves a large number of areas.
The private company working at the station was called to attend to an urgent assignment at another location, causing a temporary reduction in the workforce at the St. John’s station.
However, the company assured that they would be returning, and pledged additional resources to complete the station’s renovation by the end of the year. Last September, the Cabinet approved a $2 million renovation project for the historic city station, which is one of the country’s busiest police posts.
The station had been in a state of disrepair for some time, dealing with issues like mold, termites, and structural problems.
Due to the ongoing upgrades, the station has been closed for several months and its operations have been relocated to the former Antigua Port Authority compound on Bay Street in Villa.
In relation to crime prevention tips for the upcoming Carnival festivities, Commissioner Rodney advised people to park in well-lit areas, consider carpooling to reduce the volume of vehicles in the city, and avoid leaving valuables exposed in vehicles.
He also urged people to secure their homes when leaving for the festivities and encouraged business owners to review their security measures and seek guidance from the police if needed.
