Update: Barbed Wire Fence Removed at Sagicor

The Development Control Authority (DCA) in Antigua and Barbuda had taken swift action against Sagicor Insurance, ordering the immediate removal of barbed wire fencing recently installed along Factory Road. The decision came in response to significant safety concerns raised by the public and local authorities.

In response to the DCA’s order, Sagicor Insurance complied promptly. The barbed wire fences were removed early in the morning as instructed, alleviating concerns and ensuring the safety of carnival-goers.

Sagicor Insurance had reportedly erected the razor wire as a security measure for their premises. However, the timing and location of this installation raised eyebrows, particularly given its proximity to the upcoming carnival festivities.

Factory Road is a key route for the carnival parade, with spectators traditionally lining the fences to watch the colorful procession. The presence of barbed wire posed a severe risk to public safety, especially in the event of an emergency or crowd surge during the celebrations.

The DCA cited these potential hazards as undermining both the spirit of the carnival and the well-being of attendees. Consequently, they issued an urgent directive to Sagicor Insurance to remove the controversial fencing.
