The police would randomly patrol the city
Following Friday night’s Face Off’s cancellation, police officers scheduled to work at the event were deployed in various areas to conduct traffic stops and checks.
A contingent was deployed at the intersection of Valley Road and Sir Vivian Richards Street near CMC.
While on duty, a police constable stopped a motor vehicle, approached the driver, and requested to see his driver’s license and related documents and to search the said vehicle.
The driver offered resistance and requested the police constable to tell him what suspicion he had led to his stopping and the request to search his motor vehicle while making a telephone call to someone.
A few minutes later, the motorists called a government minister, who arrived at the scene in his black Nissan Patrol.
He inquired of the police personnel present what had occasioned the stop and request to search his relative.
He reported chided the constable in the presence of other police officers, including the second in command of the traffic department, Assistant Superintendent of Police Devon Graham.
Graham left the constable to the wrath of the Minister without intervening.
The minister cautioned the constable never to interfere with any of his family members again and instructed his family members to drive off without being searched nor providing either his driver’s license or particulars of the vehicle.
The constable was left shaken and humiliated by the Minister’s intervention and obstruction and the absence of support from his superiors.
To this present moment, no member of the Police hierarchy has called the officer and offered support in light of the Minister’s behavior.
