Police Commissioner recommends change in Shanty Town layout

9 August 2024 - 05:45

Commissioner of Police Atlee Rodney

The Police Commissioner is recommending changes to the setup of the Shanty Town area at the East Bus Station Terminal, a popular hot-spot during Carnival festivities.

This comes in response to the recent shooting late Tuesday night, which resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, raising serious concerns about violence in the area.

“The time has come to review how we set up Shanty Town,” Commissioner Rodney stated. “Yes, there are people who trade there, and it’s bustling with economic activity, but we need to reconsider its current format just because it’s referred to as a Shanty Town. Are we going to continue keeping it that way?”

Rodney emphasized that the police force is committed to addressing the root causes of violence, with these recommendations forming a crucial part of a broader strategy to create a safer environment for everyone.

“We need to improve the security mechanisms in place there, including the layout of the booths, the lighting system, and the space allocated to patrons,” he added.
